Toronto Robin Hood Tax Launch (+ video!)

On Tuesday April 20, blurry eyed Torontonians were greeted by a fabled character on their early morning commute. Starting at Yonge and Sheppard station three fearless actors performed skits on subway cars down the Yonge line to Union Station introducing the public to the Robin Hood Tax.

Robin Hood's merry band in Toronto

Carrie, who played Robin Hood, fired up bankers on their way to work who heckled her at the pronouncement of the words ‘financial transaction tax.’ Some passengers took out their smartphones to capture the excitement while others approached the actors for more information on the tax.

Meanwhile a band of merry volunteers were busy handing out information about the Robin Hood Tax to the masses passing through Union Station. In the short span of an hour and a half, six volunteers managed to hand out 5,000 cards to commuters – many of whom were intrigued by the initiative and inquired about more ways to get involved!

On the upper level of Union Station, volunteers set up a massive target promoting the policy goal of a 0.05 per cent tax on financial transactions and the newly launched Robin Hood Tax website. We know that we piqued Torontonians’ interest in the issue through this morning rush hour extravaganza and we can’t wait for more opportunities to get them to actively support the Robin Hood Tax in the upcoming months.
